Essential Oils & Kids

All I want for my kids, is health, happiness, and the chance for them to experience life to its fullest without any pain or suffering. It’s really what all mums out there want for their children. Keeping them healthy and safe can be a difficult task, and using essential oils to help them naturally is no exception.

We enjoy them daily in our house. But as with all things, you need to use essential oils with care and common sense. If you do this, then you can safely reap all the benefits they have to offer.

Here are some points that I keep in mind when using essential oils on my kids.

  1. Essential oils are not new.In fact, they have been around and used for millenniums. Essential oils contain constituents that will be recognized by our body systems and handled appropriately. So keep in mind that when you use essential oils on your children, they are not guinea pigs, meaning that thousands of children have use essential oils safely before yours.
  2. Dilute.I always like to dilute essential oils with fractionated coconut oil. This is because some essential oils can cause irritation to the skin if it is not diluted. These “hot oils”, (oils that produce some sort of warming or burning sensation when applied to the skin) such as cinnamon, peppermint, marjoram, clove, nutmeg, black pepper, etc. should be highly diluted to prevent irritation on the skin. Also, remember that kids’ skin is different from adult skin; it’s thinner and generally more sensitive.

So it may take a bit more time to dilute the oils, but it is worth doing fro your precious ones. Even though most oils tend to be non-irritating on the skin (especially on the bottom of the feet, where the skin is thickest), it’s a great idea to dilute essential oil in a good carrier oil before applying to children.

Our family love using the doTerra Touch products. Let me know if you want more info on this product.

  1. Diffuse.Using essential oils aromatically is an excellent way to enjoy the benefits without the worry of skin sensitivity. We have a diffuser in each of our kid’s bedroom. We usually like to put it on at bed time, which helps them have a peaceful nights sleep.

Many studies have shown that diffusing essential oils can enhance feelings of relaxation, encouragement, excitement, focus, and well-being. Which is great for our household!

  1. Citrus oils.My kids favorite essential oils are the citrus ones. Why? Well they are so uplifting and invigorating. We diffuse it every day! We love the Wild Orange, Lemon, and Grapefruit! Sometimes in the mornings, we dilute it with fractionated coconut oil, get them to cup it to their noses for as fresh energizing scent.

Yes we love essential oils at our house. The other day, my two year old was not feeling well, he took me by the hand to the our oil counter and pointed to it asking me to use it on him! Crazy I know, but our kids know that it works on them and that’s the first thing they want to use!
