Summer is upon us and the days have started warming up already – and I can tell you so have those mozzies!! They are buzzing around our place as big as horses!
As the days get longer and the swarms descend, we scurry to our cabinets or first aid kits to find the long forgotten, often synthetic, chemical-based repellents, in hopes of warding off the feeding frenzy.
However, there are several safety concerns related to both environmental and human health, with the use of synthetic chemicals to control insects and other pests. Many of the outdoor sprays or lotions we have been using for years also have some fairly serious side effects including skin reactions, allergic rashes and eye irritation. Many topical medicated creams for insect bite itching and irritation have side effects causing redness, irritation and swelling.
So, now is a great time to brush up on the benefits of essential oils and their insect repelling properties.
No defense is better than what we find in nature. Every living organism has unique abilities and mechanisms to fight for its continued survival and for plants that includes their own individual aromatic compounds what we know as essential oils.
For centuries, these same essential oils have been traditionally used by native human populations throughout the world to ward off mosquitos and other insects.
Many essential oils (including Arborvitae, Cedar, Cinnamon, Citronella, Clove, Geranium, Lemongrass, Spearmint, Peppermint, Rosemary and Thyme) have known repellency properties, and are considered safe for repelling insects, when used appropriately.
Many essential oil based repellants tend to lose efficacy rather quickly due to the fact that they are volatile, aromatic compounds so it is important that the formula should contain a fixative ingredient like Fractionated Coconut Oil to help keep the essential oil on the skin longer and thus help increase repellant efficiency. This year, as you go outside and enjoy all that nature has to offer, don’t let the bugs bug you. With a little planning, you can ensure that you have a great outdoor experience.
Terrashield is an effective, natural way to ward off those insects whenever needed in the great outdoors. This blend of essential oils comes as a pre-diluted (with fractionated coconut oil) 30ml spray and also in a 15ml blend essential oil that you can use to diffuse or make up your own blend to apply.
